Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) | Trafford EDT | £40 per hour

Sheldon Phillips are working with Trafford Council to recruit an experienced Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) to join their Emergency Duty Team (EDT). This is a key frontline role covering out-of-hours statutory mental health work, responding to urgent situations and ensuring appropriate legal and safeguarding interventions are in place.

Role Overview

As an AMHP within the Emergency Duty Team, you will be responsible for undertaking Mental Health Act assessments out of hours, responding to crisis situations involving individuals in the community, hospital settings, and police custody where required. You will work autonomously while being part of a wider EDT service, making timely and legally sound decisions to safeguard individuals experiencing acute mental health crises.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out Mental Health Act assessments in line with statutory requirements
  • Make decisions regarding detention under the Mental Health Act where appropriate
  • Respond to urgent and crisis referrals out of hours via the EDT service
  • Work closely with police, health professionals, hospitals, and other agencies
  • Undertake risk assessments and safeguarding enquiries in complex situations
  • Ensure accurate, timely, and legally robust documentation of all assessments
  • Provide clear rationale for decisions and outcomes following assessments
  • Work independently while contributing to a supportive EDT rota team
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of mental health legislation and guidance

Requirements

  • Qualified Social Worker with current Social Work England registration
  • Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) qualification and approval
  • Significant post-qualified experience in mental health services
  • Strong knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended) and related legislation
  • Experience of working in crisis, EDT, or acute mental health settings
  • Ability to work autonomously and make defensible, timely decisions under pressure
  • Excellent communication, risk assessment, and report writing skills
  • Full driving licence and access to transport (desirable depending on rota requirements)
