Social Worker - MASH Team

Social Worker – MASH Team
Islington Council
Children’s Services
£38.50 per hour
Locum Contract | Full-Time | 2-3 days per week working from home

Islington Council is looking for an experienced MASH Social Worker to join their Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) on a full-time locum basis. The team operates a flexible hybrid working model, with remote working available 2 to 3 days per week, making this a great opportunity for someone looking to combine autonomy with high-impact frontline safeguarding.

About the Role

As a MASH Social Worker, you’ll sit at the crucial first point of contact for children’s social care in Islington. Your role will focus on gathering information, assessing levels of risk, and determining the most appropriate and proportionate response to safeguarding concerns.

Islington’s MASH is a well-established, co-located team, bringing together professionals from children’s services, the police, education, health, housing, and early help. This collaborative model allows for informed and timely decision-making that promotes positive outcomes and avoids unnecessary escalation.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Screen and triage incoming contacts and referrals from professionals and members of the public regarding concerns about children’s welfare and safety
  • Use multi-agency information sharing to build a clear picture of each case before determining the appropriate threshold and response
  • Apply the London Child Protection Procedures and Islington's Threshold of Need guidance to all referrals
  • Identify risks such as neglect, physical abuse, emotional harm, domestic abuse, and exploitation, and decide whether cases should be stepped down to Early Help or progressed to a statutory assessment
  • Liaise closely with police, education, health professionals and other partners within the MASH to ensure prompt and informed decisions
  • Where appropriate, initiate Section 47 enquiries and strategy discussions
  • Ensure all decisions and rationales are clearly recorded, evidence-based, and made within required timeframes
  • Escalate any immediate safeguarding risks appropriately and in line with statutory duties
  • Contribute to MASH meetings, quality assurance processes, and service development reviews

What You'll Need

  • A recognised Social Work qualification and active Social Work England registration
  • Prior experience in a MASH, Duty and Assessment, or Front Door team within a UK local authority
  • A sound understanding of thresholds, legislation (Children Act 1989/2004), and multi-agency safeguarding frameworks
  • Strong communication and analytical skills, with the ability to process information quickly and make confident decisions
  • A calm, methodical, and professional approach to high-pressure decision-making environments
