Job Overview:

As the national increase in the number of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC) continues, our Central West Midlands Local Authority is expanding our capacity to support these vulnerable young people. We are seeking qualified Social Workers to join our dedicated UASC team to help provide the necessary care and support these children need as they navigate the asylum process.

About the Role:

In this role, you will work closely with unaccompanied asylum-seeking children who are separated from their parents and not under the care of any adult. As defined by the UK Border Agency, UASC are children applying for asylum in their own right, and it is our statutory responsibility to assess and support them—most often as children in care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assessment and Support: Conduct thorough assessments of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children to understand their needs and develop comprehensive care plans.
  • Care Management: Manage cases of UASC, ensuring that all statutory requirements are met and that the children receive the highest standards of care.
  • Advocacy: Act as an advocate for UASC, ensuring their voices are heard and their rights are protected throughout the asylum process.
  • Multi-Agency Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other professionals, including the UK Border Agency, healthcare providers, and legal advisors, to coordinate care and support for UASC.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Provide culturally appropriate support, understanding the unique challenges faced by UASC, including trauma, language barriers, and cultural differences.
  • Safeguarding: Ensure the safety and well-being of UASC, adhering to all safeguarding policies and procedures.

Requirements:

  • Social Work England (SWE) registration is essential.
  • Qualified Social Worker with a proven track record of working with children in care.
  • Experience working with unaccompanied asylum-seeking children is highly desirable.
  • Strong assessment, planning, and case management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment to promoting the safety and well-being of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children.

Benefits:

  • Join a supportive and dynamic UASC team committed to making a difference in the lives of vulnerable children.
  • Opportunity to work in a challenging and rewarding role that directly impacts the lives of unaccompanied children.
  • Competitive hourly rate with the flexibility of locum work.
