Location: Portsmouth (Civic Offices, Guildhall Square)
Rate: Up to £42 per hour
Contract Type: Full-time, Temporary / Interim (37 hours per week)

Portsmouth City Council is seeking a dedicated Social Worker to complete initial assessments and provide early intervention for children and families. This short-term role offers the opportunity to work within an effective and collaborative safeguarding team, committed to delivering positive outcomes for children.

The Role
As a Social Worker in the Safeguarding & Assessment Team, you will:

  • Undertake timely and proportionate initial assessments of children and families.

  • Identify needs, risks, and strengths to inform next steps in safeguarding or early help planning.

  • Provide short-term interventions to support families and reduce risks at the earliest opportunity.

  • Work closely with children, parents, and partner agencies to ensure coordinated responses.

  • Maintain clear, accurate records and contribute to effective decision making.

  • Participate fully in team meetings, supervision, and reflective discussions.

About You
We are seeking someone who:

  • Is a qualified Social Worker, registered with Social Work England.

  • Has experience in safeguarding, assessments, and early intervention work.

  • Communicates clearly and works positively with children, families, and professionals.

  • Is solution-focused, resilient, and committed to achieving the best outcomes.

  • Can thrive as part of a motivated, high-performing team.

Role Details

  • Hours: 37 per week, over 5 days.

  • Office-based requirement: 4 days per week at Civic Offices, Guildhall Square, Portsmouth.

  • Rate: Up to £42 per hour.
